At just the age of five, Mendes had laser surgery treatments to reduce the nevus.
Her mother did this because she feared that her daughter would be bullied for the birthmark.

Mendes knew that her mother had the best intentions at the time.
Nonetheless, Mendes was happy that the laser treatments didn't continue as her birthmark barely shrank.
"I don’t want to get rid of it, I’m glad no more treatments were conducted on my nevus. The laser treatment didn’t help to reduce its appearance too much thankfully," said Mendes.
"I’m grateful for that, because if I was old enough to understand I would never have wanted anyone to change my nevus in the first place."
